Tokyo has one of the world's most efficient and extensive public transportation systems. The network of trains, subways, and buses can take you virtually anywhere in the city and beyond.

Tokyo Metro & Toei Subway

The backbone of urban Tokyo travel. 13 metro lines cover all major tourist areas. Buy a Suica or Pasmo IC card for easy tap-and-go travel.

JR Lines

The JR Yamanote Line loops around central Tokyo, connecting Shinjuku, Shibuya, Harajuku, Harajuku, Tokyo, Akihabara, and Ueno. Perfect for hopping between major areas.

Buses

Useful for areas not covered by metro. Pay with IC card on entry/exit. English signage is increasingly common.

Taxis

Clean, metered, and reliable β€” but expensive. Ideal for late nights after last trains. Most accept credit cards and have GPS translation systems.

Cycling

Tokyo has an expanding bike-share network (Docomo Bike Share). Great for flat areas like Asakusa, Ueno, and Yanaka.
